HAYDEN VALLEY ~ YELLOWSTONE RIVER
Early September, late afternoon, view toward the northeast. Centrally located in Yellowstone National Park, this broad valley’s meadows were filled by an arm of Yellowstone Lake 13,000 years ago during the melt off and retreat of the Pleistocene glaciers. The fine grained lake sediments, later covered by glacial till, prevent water from easily penetrating into the ground – thus explaining the relative absence of trees in the rolling meadows (average elevation about 7,900 feet).
