PILOT & INDEX PEAKS
ABSAROKA RANGE, WYOMING
Early morning view in late June from Mud Lake, view toward the west. Pilot Peak (11,706 feet), the glacier carved horn peak, was first climbed in 1928. The adjacent peak to the right (north) was renamed in the late 1800’s when the U.S. Geological Survey refused to use the designation bestowed by the area’s early miners – Dog Turd Peak. Mud Lake is a remnant of the Pleistocene – a glacial kettle lake gradually transforming into a bog – as evidenced by the verdant floating vegetation around the lake’s perimeter.
