OCTOBER SUNRISE, PILOT & INDEX PEAKS
ABSAROKA RANGE, WYOMING

Photographed in early October – view toward the west. Pilot Peak, the classic glacier carved horn peak, is 11,708 ft. elevation and was first climbed in 1928. Prior to the end of the 19th century Index Peak was known as Dog Turd Peak — a name bestowed by the local miners. The U.S. Geological Survey refused to use that name and changed it when the first maps of the area were published.
