HIGH COUNTRY TARN
BEARTOOTH RANGE, MONTANA
Glacial tarn south of Windy Lake. Mt. Dewey and Mt. Rosebud on the far horizon. View toward the east. The “hummocks”, or small mounds, in the tundra are created by freeze–thaw cycles at this elevation (9,920 ft.) and northern temperate latitude. The Beartooths comprise the only expanse where there is permafrost within the lower 48 states.
