SUNSET, ROUGH LAKE
BEARTOOTH MOUNTAINS, MONTANA
Elevation: 10,160 ft. Twilight storm clearing. No color filtration used in this photograph — taken six weeks after the June 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines. Twenty million tons of ash were ejected into the upper atmosphere. For a few months, until the larger particles settled, this phenomenon had the effect of enhancing the rich, warm colors of sunsets and sunrises worldwide. Rayleigh's differential scattering of wavelengths of light is dependent on particle size. The result is most vivid immediately after a storm because water vapor, which tends to diminish the effect, is then reduced.
